Southern Cross Yachting
Volume 1, Issue 12, 28 July 2010 - Only 2 weeks to the gun!

Welcome to this week’s edition of Southern Cross Yachting E-news.

With the start of the Brisbane to Keppel Race just over a week away preparations have begun in earnest. The hard stand is full of race boats having their bottoms done, crackly new sails are appearing all over the marina and serious looking, square jawed young men are walking around the club holding clipboards. Yes its race time again. All eyes will be on the Southern Cross crew this weekend as we begin our race training. We expect several of the leading boats to have spies in chase boats shadowing us and helicopters filming us as they attempt to judge our form. A report that a diver in a ‘Wild Oats’ wetsuit was seen photographing Oceans keel is yet to be confirmed. We definitely have the big boys worried and I don’t want to disclose any of our techniques before race day!

The race starts at 1500 on Friday the 6th August and we are expecting a large spectator fleet to see us off. You can watch our progress live on the yacht tracker on the RQ website. Go to http://www.brisbanetokeppel.com/ and click on yacht tracker. The tracker displays the entire course and you can zoom in on sections of the map. If you start by looking at the positions of ‘Blackjack’ and ‘Wild Oats’, you will need to scroll a long way down the page to get to us! I look forward to giving you all a full report after the race.

I have just returned from West Australia after another very successful Keelboat Instructors course. We ran the program at the Royal Perth Yacht Club, once home to the ‘Auld Mug’. I refer of course to the America’s Cup - not Alan Bond.
Royal Perth is a club steeped in tradition and I attended a formal dinner in the ‘ward room’. I found it quite intimidating as every Club Commodore over the past 150 years stared sternly down at me from their portraits as I ate. The club also has the quaint tradition of a compulsory dress code of ‘whites’ for the crews of their race fleets. On the Sunday as they prepared for their race I kept thinking I was at a bowls club.

Much celebration around Manly Harbour as news of local boy Matty Belcher’s win at the 470 worlds came through. Matty and his crew of Beijing Gold medalist Malcolm Page won in a whitewash – leading the regatta from start to finish and winning with a race to spare. Well done Mathew and back to back Olympic golds for Australia in the 470 is looking like a distinct possibility.

Nothing to do this weekend? Why not get out on the water – we still have 2 places available for a one day course on Saturday on the Jeanneau 40. The dates for our next RAW (Real adventure Women) courses are now up on the website and these popular courses always fill fast.

Until next week, keep the breeze at your back
Cheers Mike Job.
