RYA Yachtmaster – Australian Commercial recognition.

As of the 1st July 2014 AMSA (the Australian Maritime Safety Authority) have formally recognised RYA qualifications as acceptable for commercial use in Australian Territorial waters on commercially registered sailing vessels. Holders of the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and Ocean Certificates of Competence can now act as Master on commercial sailing vessels less than 24 meters LOA up to 100 miles to seaward from the coast or as Mate on commercial sailing vessels less than 35 meters inside the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone. Holders of the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal certificate of competence can act as master on commercial sailing vessels less than 12 meters and up to 15 miles from the coast.

This recognition is achieved by AMSA EX18 – Marine Safety (Sail) Exemption 2014.
Effectively this means that once a person holds all of the necessary certificates they can commence working on commercially registered or surveyed sailing vessels.
To meet the criteria a person must -
A. Hold a RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or Ocean certificate of Competence with commercial endorsement from the MCA. (The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency)
B. Hold an approved, in date First Aid certificate.
C. Hold a Marine Radio Operators Certificate (minimum of VHF)
D. Hold an in date RYA, YA or ISAF Sea survival certificate
or
Have completed the Elements of shipboard safety units or the relevant STCW course.
E. Have completed the RYA Diesel Engine course.
F. Have completed the YA powerboat handling course
or
Have completed the RYA Level 2 powerboat handling course.
G. Make a declaration of medical fitness on the approved form.

The Southern Cross ‘Yachtmaster Pro’ course offers recreational sailors with the prerequisite experience a package to complete these certificates. By far the most challenging component of this is the RYA Yachtmaster exam.  The prerequisites for the Yachtmaster Offshore exam are explained in the ‘How to prepare for your Yachtmaster exam’ document. Whilst these prerequisites are not huge, very few people pass their Yachtmaster exam without any formal RYA training. Included in the package are the RYA Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster shore based theory course and a 5 day live aboard Yachtmaster preparation practical course. During the actual Yachtmaster exam, all aspects of the RYA cruising scheme syllabus are examined and candidates who have not completed the shore based course will struggle to pass.

For those who wish to be evaluated on their experience and knowledge before attempting the Yachtmaster Exam, you can undertake a one on one assessment of your knowledge and experience with Southern Cross Yachting principal Mike Job – Australia’s most experienced RYA Yachtmaster Offshore examiner. This assessment takes around 2 hours and costs $160.00. At the completion of this assessment the candidate will be given a thorough de-brief and an action plan to pass the exam, including a suggested training pathway. Call or email Southern Cross Yachting to arrange an assessment.

The complete ‘Yachtmaster Pro’ package includes the following.
- RYA Coastal Skipper/ Yachtmaster shore based theory course (5 days in the classroom) – $925
- 5 day Yachtmaster offshore exam preparation practical course (5 day practical live aboard) – $1440
