From 1 July 2025, there’s been a bit of a shake-up in the sailing world here in Australia. If you’re skippering or working commercially on sailing vessels within Australian waters, there are some important changes you need to know.
So, what’s changed? Let’s break it down.
Goodbye Exemption 18
If you’ve been operating under Exemption 18, we’ve got some news: it’s gone. Yep, as of 30 June 2025, it’s no longer valid. That means if you’re working on sailing vessels commercially, you’ll now need a proper ticket.
Enter the Sailing Master Coastal NC and Sailing Master Offshore NC certificates.
These are part of the National Law system for domestic commercial qualifications in Australia (meaning this only applies in Aussie waters, not overseas).

Already Got Your Yachtmaster? You’re Halfway There
Here’s the good news—if you’ve got an RYA Yachtmaster Certificate (Coastal or Offshore) with a commercial endorsement, you’re already most of the way there.
AMSA (the marine authority folks) recognise the Yachtmaster as part of the requirement for becoming a Sailing Master. But—there’s always a “but”—you’ll need to tick off a few other bits too:

✅ Marine Radio Certificate (short range or long range, depending on your level)
✅ Current First Aid certificate
✅ Medical Fitness certificate
✅ RYA Diesel Engine course
✅ RYA Powerboat Level II (or Australian Sailing equivalent)

All of our instructors have gone through the process themselves. They’ve worked with AMSA, completed the qualifications, and are now fully signed-off. So if you’ve got questions, chances are they’ve already been there and have the sea stories to go with it.
