This is an intensive theory course covering advanced coastal navigation techniques including – position fixing, course shaping and plotting, tidal knowledge and use of charts and other navigational publications and the correct, safe use of the GPS.
The meteorology tuition includes the taking and interpretation of forecasts, plotting of weather systems and weather prediction using barometers and by observation. Students are shown how to use this information when planning and executing passage plans. Other subjects covered in detail include – safety, yacht construction and maintenance and the collision regulations. At the end of the course students are examined on all subjects covered in the course and those who are successful are issued with a course completion certificate.
This theory course is a prerequisite for the RYA Coastal Skipper practical and for RYA Yachtmaster Coastal/Offshore candidates. We recommend students first complete RYA Day Skipper Theory and/or have significant navigation knowledge and practical experience. If RYA Day Skipper Theory was completed some time ago, consider the RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory Fastrack option that reviews RYA Day Skipper Theory principles before proceeding into the RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory syllabus.
