A well-maintained diesel engine is at the heart of safe and reliable boating. The RYA Diesel Engine Course at Southern Cross Yachting is designed to give you the essential knowledge and practical skills to prevent breakdowns and handle basic maintenance with confidence.

Whether you’re a sailing yacht owner, a powerboat skipper, or a crew member who wants to be more self-reliant, this one-day course is perfect for beginners and those who want to build confidence in handling their vessel’s engine.

What you will learn:

  • Principles of the diesel engine:  the four-stroke cycle, naturally aspirated engines, turbocharging, intercooling & aftercooling
  • Fuel system:  tank, pumps, filters, injectors, and bleeding the system
  • Cooling system:  seawater, freshwater, heat exchanger, temperature control, thermostat, seawater impeller pump
  • Air system:  intake and exhaust
  • Electrical system:  battery capacity and care, belts, alternator
  • Spares and tool requirements
  • Service schedules:  engine lubrication, transmission lubrication
  • Fault finding

We were lucky enough to spend a day with Jamie on Moreton bay and can’t speak highly enough about it.
