SAIL MANAGEMENT AND RIGGING TIPS ⛵

1)  Consider using a preventer in case of an accidental gybe

Using a preventer to keep the boom secure and avoid dangerous unintended gybes is essential when travelling with the wind behind the beam. Unplanned, or ‘crash gybes’ can cause damage to sails, rigging and crew, so preventers are a must!

2)  Always reef early!

The trade winds can be strong so reducing the sail area in advance ensures better control making it easier on the helm and crew.

3)  Broad Reach for Stability

Avoid sailing dead downwind to minimize rolling and maintain better control. ‘Wing on Wing’ might look great in your Facebook pictures but set up and efficiency are often compromised depending on the type of yacht.

PLANNING TIPS 📋

1)  Plan safe anchorages

Stops like the Keppel Islands, Pancake creek, Bundaberg or Gladstone all provide excellent shelter and rest opportunities for vessel and crew alike.

2)  Keep an eye on the weather

Monitor wind, swell and weather forecasts and adjust course to avoid excessive rolling and ensure a comfortable & safe passage.

3)  Don’t forget to brief your crew

“there are old sailors and bold sailors…”

Wear safety gear

Harnesses and lifejackets are essential, especially at night.

Assign weather updates and navigational forecasts

Be prepared for sudden squalls and shifting conditions.

Monitor tides & currents

Plan navigation carefully around reefs and strong tidal areas.

With proper planning and safety awareness, your downwind passage can be both exhilarating and secure.
