Most overseas charter companies require prospective charterers to hold an internationally recognised sailing certification.  The Royal Yachting Association’s (RYA’s) International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (formerly the International Certificate of Competence), or ICC, is widely recognised and recommended by charter companies.

Southern Cross Yachting can help you realise your dream of chartering overseas.  If you’re a new sailor, we can help you gain the skills and knowledge by undertaking the ICC course more appropriately known as RYA Day Skipper and, if you’re an experienced sailor, we can evidence your skills for your RYA ICC to accompany your application.

As a leading Australian RYA training centre, we are here to help you achieve the qualifications you need. To get started, give us a call on 07 3396 4100 or reach out through our contact page.

What is the RYA ICC?

Holders of an ICC have completed sail training and/or assessment by an RYA Training Centre and this recognition of skills and knowledge is often required by charter companies and overseas marine authorities.  The ICC can only be issued to those who are a resident of, or hold a passport for, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, and the United Kingdom and its territories.

An ICC is obtained upon application to the RYA, and applicants have two pathways for providing evidence of their sailing skills and knowledge.

  • RYA Day Skipper (or higher) certificate holders apply directly to the RYA for the ICC; or
  • Experienced skippers at the level of RYA Day Skipper or higher who do not hold certification can participate in a half-day ICC Sail Assessment.  If feeling a bit rusty on navigation or practical skills, we offer a combined ICC Course package of on-water training followed by the ICC Sail Assessment.  Allow a full day for the combined package.

Southern Cross Yachting is a sail training centre, therefore, the category of vessels you will be valid for skippering are:

  • Sail (including auxiliary engine) vessel up to 24m LOA.
  • Power, restricted up to 10m to allow the holder to drive a tender with an outboard engine.

We were lucky enough to spend a day with Jamie on Moreton bay and can’t speak highly enough about it. Three of us with varied previous experience of sailing joined with a father and son to share in a day of learning the ropes. The day was tailored to our varied needs and at all times we were able to ask questions and glean experience from Jamie’s wealth of knowledge. We would highly recommend signing up for a course if you’re interested in getting back on the water after a hiatus. Thanks so much guys! It was a priceless day!
