RYA Coastal Skipper Theory (Online)

The Coastal Skipper/ Yachtmaster theory is an advanced course for those who wish to skipper a yacht on longer coastal passages or for students working towards the RYA Yachtmaster qualification. Anyone who cruises in open waters or races offshore owes it to their crew to have the knowledge this training covers.

Duration: Online course – students work through the modules at their own pace.  Course materials including Yachtmaster shorebased course notes, CD, exercises, practice charts and almanac are provided. Approximately 40 hours.

Previous experience required:Course completion of RYA Day Skipper shore based or similar course or previous practical navigation experience and some yachting experience is necessary before starting the course.

Course content: This is an intensive course covering advanced coastal navigation techniques including – position fixing, course shaping and plotting, tidal knowledge and use of charts and other navigational publications and the correct, safe use of the GPS.

The meteorology tuition includes the taking and interpretation of forecasts, plotting of weather systems and weather prediction using barometers and by observation. Students are shown how to use this information when planning and executing passage plans. Other subjects covered in detail include – safety, yacht construction and maintenance and the collision regulations.

At the end of the course students are examined on all subjects covered in the course and those who are successful are issued with a course completion certificate.
