RYA schools throughout Australia and the world are always looking for instructors both casual and part time. Instructing is an incredibly rewarding career and is also a great way for experienced sailors or power boaters to get out on the water and get paid whilst you do it!
RYA Cruising Instructor Courses
The RYA Cruising Instructor qualification allows the holder to teach practical courses up to RYA Day Skipper level. It is only for experienced sailors who already hold the Yachtmaster sail or power certificate of competence. One of only a handful of people worldwide are appointed as an RYA Yachtmaster Instructor Examiner and this is who will put you through the paces before gaining the qualification. The course is held over 5 days.. During the course candidates are taught about the structure and content of the RYA training syllabus, lesson planning for both practical and theory sessions, time and location management and shown the many teaching techniques used in the delivery of the RYA courses. Others topics include briefing and de-briefing techniques, interaction skills and managing change!
This is a very hands-on course with each candidate planning and delivering training sessions to real live students.
It is important that instructor candidates understand that this course is not designed to teach sailing and boating skills but to teach you how to teach! Not all candidates pass this demanding course at the end of the time but those who are not completely ready, are given an action plan to continue developing their skills before a re-assessment.
