Joining Instructions

Thank you for booking a course with Southern Cross Yachting (a reminder that a booking is only confirmed by paying in full). Details of what to bring and where to meet are outlined below. It would be a pleasure to answer any queries you may have.
We look forward to seeing you.

What do I need to bring?

One Day Courses

The School provides lunch, morning and afternoon tea.

You should bring:
A well fitting cap or hat (that won’t blow off in the wind!)
Sunglasses & sunscreen.
You may wish to bring a water bottle (it can be refilled on the boat). Water on board is suitable for drinking.
Wear clothes appropriate to the season.
Shirts should have a collar to keep the sun off the back of your neck
A change of clothes in case you get wet
If you have some form of wet-weather or spray jacket bring it with you.
Outside of high summer a warm sweater and bring or wear long pants as it can get cold out on the water.
Wear white-soled shoes such as deckshoes or trainers but no hard black soles please, as they mark the deck. Thongs or sandals are not appropriate footwear on a sailing boat!
Please pack your belongings in a soft bag and keep it to a minimum.

Weekend/ Long Weekend or 5 Day courses

All meals are provided on board but the crew may eat one evening meal ashore, particularly on the 5 day courses so you will need some money for this (it won’t be any-where expensive!). Everyone will be involved in meal preparation and clean up and can initiate meals/ snacks when they are hungry.  Those that wish to bring alcohol may do so.  There will also be opportunities to pick up supplies at various marinas during the course.

You will need:
A change of clothes for each day, as there is no washing machine on board!
On 5-day courses we will pull into marinas a couple of times during the course for showers.
A good hat that won’t blow off in the wind (and maybe a spare)
Sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent. A packet of wet wipes are handy to freshen up between showers.
Pack at least one warm item of clothing as even in summer it can get chilly at night. Bring clothes appropriate to the season and don’t forget your swimming togs and towel. Warm socks and beanie for winter night sailing….it gets cool !!
You may wish to bring a water bottle (it can be refilled on the boat). Water on board is suitable for drinking.
Please also bring a base sheet and upper sheet +/-  sleeping bag or blanket (depending on the weather) and pillow.
You will need a wet-weather or spray jacket
White–soled trainers or deckshoes no hard black soles please, as they mark the deck. A spare pair of shoes is a good idea in case your others get wet.
Pack all belongings in a soft bag (there is no room on a yacht to stow a suitcase!).
If you have a favourite hand-bearing compass please bring it along.
If you already have a log book please bring it along otherwise you will receive one at the end of the course.
If you are undertaking your Day Skipper ticket …please bring along a passport photo for your certificate.

Where are the yachts?
All practical courses depart from EAST COAST MARINA located at the southern end of MANLY BOAT HARBOUR. EAST COAST MARINA is situated on Royal Esplanade between the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron and Wynnum-Manly Yacht Club. The skipper will meet you at our office at East Coast Marina looking over the harbour in the complex.

On weekends please park in the large public carpark outside RQYS (Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron) at the southern end of the boat harbour and walk along the pathway between the road and the large boat racks. Once at East Coast Marina – walk through the complex,  pass the cafe on your left, then turn left when you are looking over the water to find our office.

Trains, Planes, and Automobiles – How do I get there?

Why not relax and catch the train? Manly train station is on the Cleveland line and trains depart from Central, Roma Street, and South bank Stations each ½ hour from around 5 am daily. We will arrange to meet you at the eastern side of Manly station on your arrival. The trip takes about 35 minutes and is a very stress-free way to begin a sailing trip!
For those arriving at either Brisbane International or Domestic airports there is a train to the city which connects with another to Manly Station. It would be a pleasure to meet you at Manly Railway station on your arrival. See for train timetables.

What Time do the Courses Start? We will leave the office for the yachts at 9am so aim to arrive at least 15 minutes early.
